How to Enable 4K 60Hz Support on Your Macbook 2016

In their support page, Apple stated that Macbook only supports 30 Hz out of the box for 4K resolution. They clearly stated that 4K resolution is just limited to 30 Hz. But that's not true at all!

In fact, a 2016 Macbook can have a 4K resolution @ 60 Hz and this guide will help you achieve that feature.

Important things to know (or some disclaimer):

We don't know why Apple did not enable 4K resolution out of the box on the 2016 Macbook as its Intel Core M chip, along with the Intel HD graphics 515 integrated graphics is highly capable of supporting 4K resolution at 60 Hz.

Well perhaps the 2016 Macbook can heat up easily if the 4K resolution at 60 Hz is turned on. And, Apple did not tell us about this just to protect our Mac from any damage. So probably, if you decide to use this method, take note that you are doing it "at your own risk".

How to Enable 4K 60Hz Support on Your Macbook 2016

Step 1: Disable the System Integrity Protection (SIP). To do this, just restart your Mac and hold ⌘+R while rebooting. This will then prompt your macbook to boot into recovery mode. In the menu, go to "Utilities" and select "Terminal". Once you are in the terminal, simply type the following command line: csrutil disable; reboot. Then press "Enter".

Step 2: Once done removing the SIP, we then move to patching the Mac's OS. First you need to download this ready made patch here (all credits to a guy named Floris). Take note that that this is a Git repository link which means that you'll need to right click on "Raw" and select "Download Linked File As". Once done downloading, set priviliges inside your OS. To do this, simply open the "Terminal" window and type the following line: chmod +x. After that, drag the patch from your download directory and drop it inside the Terminal then press Return to execute.

Step 3: The next thing to do is apply the patch. To do this, open the Terminal window again and then drag the patch file into the window and then press Return. Once done, OS X will ask for your credentials like admin password. Finally, click Return to run the patch and once done, restart your mac.

Step 4: After rebooting, open System Preferences and then select Displays. Make sure that the option for 30 Hz is no longer available. If it's not, then this means that you have successfully run the patch and enjoy the 4K resolution @ 60 Hz!

Bonus Tip: For security purposes, you need to re-enable your SIP. To do this, follow the method in STEP 1 only this time, you'll type the following command line instead: csrutil enable; reboot. Then click Return and restart your 2016 Macbook.
