How To Unlock All Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain Buddies

While you will unlock most of Big Boss’s Buddies as you progress through the main story, there are two hidden Buddies that you don’t automatically get.

Tactical Buddies are valuable allies you can take into the area of operations with you. Buddies can be used after fulfilling certain requirements.

How To Select a Buddy: You can select a buddy when deploying to an area of operations, or you can summon them during a mission by going to the iDROID’s [MISSIONS] tab and choosing [BUDDY SUPPORT].

How To Give Orders to Buddies: Give orders to buddies either from the Call Menu (activate by holding the left shoulder button and pressing on the right analogue stick) or by going to the iDROID’s [MISSIONS] tab and choosing [BUDDY SUPPORT].

Note: D-Horse is automatically available as a Buddy from the start of the game (Episode 1).

Complete 3 more story missions until you’re called about Quiet (which is the newly unlocked Side Op 111: Visit Quiet). Then visit Mother Base’s Medical Platform (as Big Boss!) to find her cell. The way to get there is from the landing helipad go down the stairs in front of you. Revolver Ocelot will suggest she might be useful in future missions. – Right after that, you should call back the helicopter topside to leave Mother Base and you’ll get a cutscene with Quiet appearing, now available as a Buddy.

How To Keep: Warning! You risk losing Quiet after “Episode 45: A Quiet Exit”. If you do not want to lose Quiet as a Buddy, then make sure to equip the “Butterfly Emblem” before starting this mission and she will stay with you!
