When the Nintendo NX was first announced as the successor to the Wii U, people were expecting big things from Nintendo’s newest console. Fast forward to last Friday, where Nintendo held a special event for the Nintendo Switch, and between then and now we’ve been given a steady stream of information on the upcoming hybrid device.
In a recent interview with Kotaku, Nintendo fed them a lot of new information, but also didn’t at the same time. From this interview, we now know for sure that there will be no form of backwards compatibility for Wii U, Wii, or 3DS games, however they declined to comment on VC titles. Nintendo also mentioned that old controllers would not work with the Switch, however they’re considering bringing that feature with a feature update.
Here’s the official word from Nintendo:
Is Switch backwards compatible in any way? Will you be able to download or play Wii, Wii U, or 3DS games?
The Nintendo Switch system is not backward compatible with games designed for other systems, and is not currently compatible with controllers designed for other systems. Support for certain controllers may be considered for a future update. We have nothing to announce regarding Virtual Console or other types of digital purchases at this time.
