If you’re like me, you may think that you’re a fairly avid Pokémon GO player, yet you’ve seen your leveling progress pretty much stall almost completely over the last few months. It was a relatively quick path for most players to level from 1-20 or so during the initial launch of the game, but Pokémon GO has a rather odd XP system that starts to increase XP requirements exponentially the higher you go.
As such, progress doesn’t just slow down as you go on, unless you are a die-hard player, it can feel like it grinds to a halt, and like you’ll never reach the max level of 40, which requires 20 million total XP to reach. Get to 39? You’re only 75% of the way there as it takes 5 million XP alone to get from 39 to 40. This is why out of hundreds of millions of players around the world, only a scarce handful have actually hit max level.
I recently stumbled upon a (not new) tool that allows you to input your data and figure out just how long it’s going to take you to reach level 40 in Pokémon GO at your current pace. If you’re thinking weeks or months like how leveling might work in other games, think again. Try years.
As for me, I’m level 27. If you’re wondering how someone who writes about Pokémon GO so much is that “low,” it’s because I have about six million other games I have to play for work at all times, and also I live in Chicago where it’s now close to impossible to play much in the winter. Also, I took a decent amount of time off this fall in the “dead time” before Niantic started throwing special events.
So, using this calculator, my million plus XP and about 180 days play time since starting in mid-July, I’ve discovered that I’m still over eight and a half years away from getting to level 40 at my current pace, which is just under 6,000 XP a day. I should hit level 40 just in time for Niantic’s Thanksgiving event….in 2025.
Yours might be higher or lower than mine, and if you’re a truly, ultra-dedicated player, maybe you can get it down from years to months after all, but I’m willing to bet that most players are in that range, which is more than a little dispiriting.
I don’t necessarily bring this up to say it’s some huge problem with the game that must be changed immediately, but it does remind me that Pokémon GO’s leveling system is pretty weird. There’s essentially no terribly good reason to care much about leveling past 30, which is where wild Pokémon CP caps out. Yes, you can still increase CP manually after this as you reach new levels past 40, but the costs are insane in order to prevent total domination of the game by players with totally maxed out Pokémon. You get handfuls of items with each level, but honestly, the leveling system is secondary to almost everything else in the game.
I do think it wouldn’t hurt for the curve to be adjusted just a little bit. I understand that most games have the XP required to reach the next level increase over time, but the scale here is just totally wacky, and it creates at least the illusion of stalled progress, even if fundamentally leveling is that important to the game.
It’s a weird situation that it will probably take years to max out in a game that you think you play quite a bit, but that’s the way things work now. Test it out for yourself here, and see what your number is.
