The Next Destiny Update Will Fix This Really Annoying Issue

Bungie will be fixing some annoying bugs in Destiny that have been persistent in the game for a long while. They have a two step approach to killing the bugs, one of which is a really annoying melee attack that doesn't actually connect the fist to the head the way it's supposed to.

According to Eurogamer the first part of the patch will go live on Tuesday, May 3rd. In patch 2.2.0.2., Bungie will unleash the patch that contains various updates to Destiny. However, the more pressing issue of melee attacks not properly connecting are attached to a networking issue and will require more time to implement.

Over on the Bungie website, engineer Jon Cable explained,
When a melee attack seems like it connects, but it doesn’t do any damage, this is usually a networking problem. Most commonly, it occurs when there is an issue communicating your position to the other machines in the game, or if your would-be victim is having a similar problem. I’ve tweaked some networking logic related to player positions during melee attacks which should help address these issues. This error can still occur, because the internet isn’t perfect, but it should be better.
This issue also happens with shoulder melee strikes that “whiff” past enemies without doing any damage. Cable attributes this to a sandbox problem where the actor's positions were off, so the starting position of where melee attacks will charge a player toward an opponent have been modified and adjusted. Ultimately it's a network synching issue, but they plan on making tweaks in-engine to try to compensate for lag or possible packet loss during data synchs that might result in a melee attack not connecting.

These problems have been occurring in Destiny for quite some time, but they're finally getting around to fixing these issues.

The only drawback is that the update to correct the melee issue will not go live with patch 2.2.0.3. As mentioned at the top of the article, there will be a two-part roll-out for the update to fix the sandbox problem, because of how easy it is to break the entire game's logic when messing with the sandbox. So what Bungie will do instead is launch patch 2.2.0.3 and then monitor the performance and stability across Destiny over the weekend starting May 6th. If things look a-okay, they will then proceed to manually implement the melee fixes and sandbox changes starting the Tuesday after this one, on May 10th.

Bungie seems to want to address fixes in the sandbox as cautiously as possible. It isn't like GTA where there are scripts and autonomous blocks were certain things can be worked on independent of the rest of the game. Although, that's not to say that they still don't have to do extensive testing in GTA Online whenever they make a new content or implement new add-on packs.

Anyway, you can look for patch 2.2.0.3 to go live this Tuesday on May 3rd. The patch will fix some very, very minor things in regards to quests, treasure chests and some very minor tweaks with rewards. The more important melee fix will go live the following week after extensive testing on May 10th. So until then, you'll just have to deal with “whiffing” through some enemies in Destiny.
