So here's a cheat sheet for heroes in Overwatch. This page will give you some basic knowledge about a hero in Overwatch and their weakness and strengths in the game.
Bastion
Bastion
Bastion is an extremely powerful turret. However, due to his immobility, he can easily be countered by long ranged heroes and flankers. Pair him with a shield for the best results.
He is a hero that, due to his immobile play style, is best played on defense. He can be effective on attack, but only when positioned well with a good team.
Effective against:
- Reaper
- Mercy
- Lucio
- D.Va
- Winston
Be careful when facing:
- Widowmaker
- Genji
- Hanzo
- Pharah
- Junkrat
- Tracer
D.Va
D.Va is an offensive tank who specializes in assaulting the enemy team on the objective. Her abilities allow her to survive longer than other tanks.
She has very little in terms of defensive abilities, and therefore should always be played with another tank. She is best on attack, as a defensive D.Va is rarely effective.
Get up close to:
- Widowmaker
- Hanzo
- Torbjorn
- Soldier 76
- D.Va can be effective against Torbjorn's turret if she gets up close, or uses her ultimate to take them out.
Be careful around:
- Junkrat
- Roadhog
- Zarya
- Zenyatta
- Mei
Genji (In-depth strategy guide)
Genji is a strong flanker, who exvels at eliminating key targets, such as damage dealers and out-of-place support heroes. He works best at a close range.
He can work well on both attack and defense, as long as the enemy doesn't have a lot of tanks. Genji's job is to harass the enemy, so he should avoid playing the ovjective unless absolutely required.
Great counter to
- Widowmaker
- Roadhog
- Bastion
- Torbjorn
- D.Va
Try to avoid:
- Tracer
- Pharah
- Zarya
- Mei
- Winston
Hanzo
Hanzo is a sniper who is very effective at quickly killing low-medium health heroes. His ability to climb walls allows him to get great vantage points and always stay on the move.
His primary role is defense, but as long as your team can protect you and you can effectively land your arrows, he can also be played just as effectively as an offensive damage dealer.
Effective against:
- Zenyatta
- McCree
- Bastion
- Torbjorn
- Pharah
- Symmetra
Easily countered by:
- Tracer
- Genji
- Widowmaker
- Mei
- Reinhardt
Junkrat
Junkrat is a high-damage hero who excels at holding chokes and enclosed areas. Try to get up higher than your enemies, as having the high ground advantage makes Junkrat more effective.
He is generally stronger on defense, but is perfectly viable on attack if the enemy team tends to group up a lot, or has a lof of slow-moving heroes (such as tanks or slow moving damage dealers like McCree).
Effective against:
- Teams that do not have a lot of fast moving heroes
Avoid running to:
- Widowmaker
- Hanzo
- Reaper
- Pharah
Avoid heroes that can kill you easily from a long range. as your grenades will not launch far enough to kill them.
Lucio
Lucio is a support hero who specializes in buffing multiple heroes at once. His speed boost and healing allow him to coordinate strong pushes and block a lot of damage from enemy attacks.
Lucio is very effective on both attack and defense, but works best when supporting short-ranged heroes (such as Reaper or Mei), as his speed boost allows them to perform strong pushes that are hard to block.
Effective with:
- Every hero, especially close range damage dealers.
Lucio is weak to:
- Widowmaker
- Tracer
- Pharah
- Roadhog
Lucio is weak to heroes that can burst him down before he is able to heal. Avoid LOS on long range heroes.
McCree
McCree is a heavy damage dealer who has the capability to easily pick away at long range, and quickly burst heroes down at a short range. Positioning is key because of McCree's low mobility.
He is best when the enemy has to come to him, and is therefore slightly better on defense. He is strong on attack if paired with a shielding tank.
Effective against:
- Roadhog
- Reinhardt
- Tracer
- Genji
- McCree's ability to stun and then immediately fan the hammer allows him to deal lots of damage to tanks.
Easily countered by:
- Widowmaker
- Bastion
- Hanzo
McCree's weakness is defense heroes, as there is little he can do against long range damage dealers.
Mei
Mei is a very strong defensive hero who specialize in area control. She is difficult to play, but once learned can be extremely effective at holding off attackers and locking down an objective.
Her abilities allow her to work well on both attack and defense. Her Ice Wall allows her to block line of sight from ult-ing heroes, turrets and snipers on both attack and defense.
Effective against:
- Widowmaker
- Hanzo
- Lucio
- Symmetra
- Bastion
- Torbjorn
Quickly killed by:
- Reaper
- Pharah
- Junkrat
Mei can be quickly killed by any hero who can burst her down before she is able to freeze them back.
Mercy
Mercy is a very strong healer who is very versatile, but also very vulnerable. She can fly around frequently to buff her whole team and avoid incoming enemy damage.
She works well on both attack and defense, but is most effective alongside a team who is able to protect her from damage.
Effective in:
- Any team composition, as long as her teammates can protect her
Watch out for:
- Widowmaker
- Hanzo
- McCree
- Without someone to fly to, Mercy can easily be killed by every other hero. However, always beware of snipers.
Pharah
Pharah is an offensive damage dealing hero, who is good at surprising the enemy with heavy damage bursts from unexpected places.
She is very effective on both attack and defense. Try to engage at long range, as most short range heroes can kill her quickly. Use her flight to get to unexpected places.
Effective against:
- Torbjorn
- Bastion
- Junkrat
- Mei
Pharah is also effective against most other offense heroes, but watch out for long range attacks.
Quickly killed by:
- Widowmaker
- Hanzo
- McCree
- Roadhog
- Soldier 76
Reaper
Reaper is a powerful short-range damage dealer who can easily take down high-health heroes at a close range. His abilities also make him an effective flanker, allowing him to get around the enemy team without detection.
His abilities make him strong on attack, but he can still be useful on defense to push back against tanks positioned in the front line. Using the high ground makes it easy to silently get behind the enemy.
Focus on killing:
- Mercy
- Zenyatta
- Widowmaker
- Hanzo
- Winston
- D.Va
Avoid encountering:
- Pharah
- Lucio
- McCree
- Soldier 76
Although McCree is not a direct counter, one burst from his fan-the-hammer is enough to take you out.
Reinhardt
Reinhardt is a powerful tank that is strong on attack, but still perfectly viable in defense.
His mobile shield makes him very effective when attack on escort maps.
Great at blocking:
- Widowmaker
- Hanzo
- Bastion
- Torbjorn
Reinhardt is most effective against long-range heroes, as he can easily block their damage with his shield.
Easy to be killed by
- Pharah
- Junkrat
- McCree
- Reaper
- Mei
- Zenyatta
Roadhog
Roadhog is a high-damage tank who works well at controlling area, flank, or choke. He is able to quickly burst down most heroes.
He is best on defense, to lock down an area of the map. His ability to self heal makes him able to stay away from the team for long periods of time.
Strong at killing:
- D.Va
- Pharah
- Genji
- Tracer
- Zenyatta
- Mercy
Avoid at long range:
- Pharah
- Torbjorn
- Widowmaker
- Hanzo
- Bastion
- Zenyatta
These heroes, especially Zenyatta and Pharah, are only dangerous when out of range of Roadhog's hook.
Soldier 76
Soldier 76 is a damage dealer that is strongest at medium range. His sustained damage allows him to quickly kill low to medium health targets with ease.
He works great as a damage dealer on both attack and defense, and is easy for new player to pick up, given that they have played and FPS game before.
Effective at killing:
- Pharah
- Roadhog
- Bastion
- Torbjorn
Helix rockets can be used to easily kill stationary targets, and Soldier's pulse rifle shreds through Pharah in mid-air.
Watch out for:
- McCree
- Reaper
- Hanzo
- Widowmaker
Avoid long/short range heroes as Soldier 76 lacks the ability to kill either quickly enough to be effective.
Symmetra
Symmetra is a support hero that can be very useful, but not in all situations. She is best played when the current objective is far away from your team's spawn room.
She works best on defense, because although her turrets can deal a lot of damage, they are only effective when the enemy team has to come to them. Her teleported is easy to destroy, so place it in a hidden location.
Turrets work well on:
- Genji
- Tracer
- Reaper
If the enemy has a lot of flank heroes, set up your turrets in a glank to make it more difficult for them to succeed.
Turrets are vulnerable to:
- Junkrat
- Pharah
- Zarya
- Winston
Symmetra is less effective against a team with a lot of splash damage, as her turrets will be killed easily.
Torbjorn
Torbjorn is a turret-building hero that is effective at stopping pushes and locking down an area. He is good on both escort and assault.
He is really only effective on defense, and should almost never be used on offense.
Turret is best against:
- A team with few tanks and/or many squishy heroes
Turret is vulnerable to:
- Pharah
- McCree
- Widowmaker
- Hanzo
- Tracer
- Zenyatta
- Junkrat
Tracer
Tracer is a burst damage flanker, who excels at picking off specific targets at close range, and staying alive behind enemy lines. She is best played on attack.
Her easiest targets are less mobile defense heroes. However, she can also traget support heroes who are away from their team. Tracer is god tier on control maps, like Illios.
Effective against:
- Widowmaker
- Hanzo
- Bastion
- Torbjorn
- Mercy
- Zenyatta
Don't get too close to:
- McCree
- Reaper
- Roadhog
- Winston
- Soldier 76
- Pharah
Widowmaker
Widowmaker is a long-ranged sniper who is effective at killing low to medium health targets. She is best positioned up high, somewhere behind the front lines of her team.
Widowmaker works well on both attack and defense, as long as the map that is being played on has areas where she can take advantage of her long-range sniper rifle.
Focus on killing:
- Mercy
- Zenyatta
- McCree
- Soldier 76
- Bastion
- Torbjorn
Run away from:
- Tracer
- Genji
- Reaper
- Winston
To avoid getting pre-fired, move around between different vantage points as often as possible.
Winston
Winston is a tank hero who specializes in objective control. His mobility grants him the ability to easily disrupt enemy heroes.
He is effective on both attack and defense, but in either role positioning is the key.
Effective against:
- Torbjorn
- Widowmaker
- Hanzo
- Genji
- Tracer
Easily countered by
- Reaper
- McCree
- Mei
- Zenyatta
Beware of high-damage, close-range heroes (like Reaper), as they can kill you long before you can kill them.
Zarya
Zarya is a very strong tank, but lacks the defensive abilities to block much damage. Because of this, she is best played as a secondary tank, alonside another tank that can shield attacks.
She works well on attack and defense, and in most team compositions. Her graviton surge combos with other many other hero's ultimates and makes them stronger.
At high energy, Zarya can easily kill:
- Almost every other hero in the game
Quickly killed by
- Bastion
- Reaper
At low energy, Zarya is easily killed by almost every attack hero. At high energy, she can kill almost every hero except for Reaper and Bastion.
Zenyatta
Zenyatta is a secondary support who is good at assisting his team in killing static defenders, such as tanks and turrets.
In general, he is most effective on attack, but can be good on defense if the attacking team has a lot of tanks, like Winston and/or D.Va
Effective against:
- Torbjorn
- Bastion
- Reinhardt
- Winston
- D.Va
- Roadhog
Watch out for:
- Hanzo
- Widowmaker
- Genji
- Tracer
As Zenyatta, try to avoid being in any sniper's line of sight, and watch your back for flankers and assassins.
