2016 already has a long list of highly anticipated releases and Tom Clancy's The Division is probably among the top 3 of those releases too. But in terms of online games, there's another competitor in this area, and it's to be the heralded return of Bungie's Destiny.
These two games have been discussed together ever since they were unveiled. Tom Clancy's The Division is going to offer us a chance to have various online characters, all of which can be levelled up in an RPG progression system. Destiny is similar in this regard, and with the release of The Taken King, we've not only seen an increase in quality, but an emphasis on team work - something which The Division outlines as a key factor of its gameplay.
Were Destiny still in its original form, I don't think any of us would be particularly excited about the notion of Destiny 2 being released next year. But The Taken King demonstrated that Bungie actually created some good narrative content for the game - the content that Activision stripped from the original product.
Playing Destiny now, in the form of The Taken King, presents a very different kind of online experience. The game is actually engaging, you care about the characters, and you have clear goal in mind - which certainly gives a sense of purpose to the mindless grinding. Therefore, we have a lot of hope for Destiny 2. Hopefully, Activision have seen the error of their ways, and 2016 could see Destiny become a must-play for all console owners.
Then we have The Division. Having had the experience to play Tom Clancy's The Division earlier this year, I'm not exactly sure whether I'm excited for Ubisoft's online RPG. It was certainly fun and intriguing, but I couldn't see much depth to the product, and I'm concerned that players will become bored with the game after a few hours.
But if it turns out to be a worthwhile game - one that can stand its ground against the massively successful Destiny - then we could see Ubisoft succeed in delivering an IP that we'll be playing for years. Personally, I have my doubts that The Division can attain this status, or surpass the achievement of Destiny 2 - and I don't even like Destiny! But I could most certainly be wrong, and I really hope that I am!
Which Release Date Has Your Attention?
My feelings towards The Division could simply be a symptom of overhype. Ubisoft have been talking about Tom Clancy's The Division for too long, and the amount of delays that its suffered haven't helped the IP at all. As it stands, I'm not particularly excited for The Division, and I'd love to hear where you stand on this product.
In terms of Destiny 2, I have hope. I enjoyed the gameplay innovations that The Taken King introduced, and if Bungie are permitted to do with the sequel as they see fit, I could see myself getting back into Destiny in a big way.
But what about you? Are you still hyped to try out Ubisoft's new IP? Are you looking forward to seeing what Bungie can create with Destiny 2? Let us know which online game has your attention before its release date in 2016!
