Thousands of Pokemon fans will descend on Grant Park July 22 for Pokemon Go Fest, a first-of-its-kind daylong event for players of the augmented reality smartphone game.
But while tickets sold out swiftly and are reselling for hundreds of dollars on eBay, game creator Niantic still hasn’t said much about plans for the event — aside from vague hints at special in-game promotions for attendees and the promise of designated lounges for players from each of the three teams that users align themselves with on the app.
A permit application with the Chicago Park District shows more information about Pokemon Go Fest, though — including a proposed map of the site. Here’s what we found.
• The permit application says 15,000 to 20,000 attendees are expected at the event, which is planned for Grant Park’s Butler Field and the neighboring North Rose Garden. A spokesman for Niantic declined to comment on the number of attendees.
• Each team’s lounge will have several 60-inch TV monitors, and each will be accompanied by a team gym — a site where players compete against other Pokemon.
• The Petrillo Music Shell will serve as the event’s main stage, and will feature an “ultimate gym.”
• The organizers have requested Jackson Drive, which runs between Butler Field and the North Rose Garden, be closed between Columbus and Lake Shore drives. The map shows Jackson as being home to the event’s food court.
• Although organizers received permission to sell alcohol, the Niantic spokesman said it will not be sold at the event.
• Clusters of Wi-Fi hot spots will be scattered around the park — important because the game requires constant internet access to function.
• A total of 66 portable restrooms are shown on the site map.
• Pokemon Go Fest’s organizers requested and received permission to have inflatables on-site — what they might be is unclear, but a “Pikachu photo op” is on the map near the Petrillo Music Shell.
• Organizers didn’t request permission to install any kind of rides, lifts, or climbing walls (nor petting zoos or pyrotechnics) — all checkboxes on the Park District’s permit application.
• The Park District permit will cost organizers $50,805, according to the application.
Details about the event could change before July 22 — the permit application dates to March, and the site map says it was last modified June 14.
Rare Pikachu
In addition, there has been reports that there will be a special variant of Pikachu in the future. It appears to be a rare pikachu which will be revealed on Siggraph 2017:
