Destiny 2 developer Bungie has shed a little light on how it plans to reward veteran players in the upcoming sequel. Granted, the devs did not give the full scope of those rewards, but they did explain one of the more visual representations.
As expected, players of Destiny 1 will be rewarded with emblems for completing specific objectives during the game’s first three years. For each objective completed, these Destiny 2 players will be rewarded with an emblem, up to 7 in total.
What’s unique about emblems in Destiny 2 is that, in addition to branding a player’s gamertag in a fireteam, they now brand the character inventory screen as well. Bungie has added a small horizontal space on the screen where a player’s emblem will be seen. Check out an example below:
As far as what emblems players will be able to use in that space, Bungie is trying to keep things as much of a mystery as possible. Veteran players, however, have specific goals to shoot for in Destiny 1 in order to unlock some guaranteed emblems. Unfortunately, not all of the emblems are available to players, only those tied to the current Age of Triumph book and Grimoire score can still be earned.
But, if players completed any node in the Moments of Triumph from Year 1 they will earn an emblem, as well as an additional emblem for completing all 10 Moments of Triumph.
The same setup continues for Year 2’s Moments of Triumph – one emblem for completing a node, and one for completing the entire event.
For the Age of Triumph, Bungie is awarding two emblems, one for reaching rank 2 in the book and one for reaching rank 7. Basically, if a player has unlocked the Age of Triumph shirt in Destiny 1 then they will have both emblems available in Destiny 2.
And finally, there is a special emblem for reaching 5,000 Grimoire Score in Destiny 1.
No doubt there are some Destiny veterans that are hoping for something a little more special than emblems to mark their accomplishments. And the good news is that Bungie is not done “rewarding” them. However, the Destiny 2 team doesn’t want to give away all of its secrets just yet.
What we can say is that there will be moments packed into Destiny 2 that will only matter (or be significant) to those who played the first game. Presumably there are story bits that call back to the events of Destiny 1, and perhaps some nods to characters or villains. But whether there will be more tangible ways for veteran players to show their status is unclear, and Bungie isn’t saying any more this week.
