Destiny players used to either look forward to or dread getting new loot from a boss. This is because not every gun was created equal, as they would have randomized stats and attributes. So even if you spent hours and hours farming for that Legendary Sniper Rifle, you weren't guaranteed to get the optimal one.
It seems that this is changing for Destiny 2, as all weapons have the same stats, no matter what.
"It's gonna give us more flexibility to do per-item tuning," Destiny 2 Director Luke Smith said to Mashable. "That's something we haven't had before because of the way we were building the first Destiny."
This per-item tuning will mean they'll be able to turn knobs like damage and individual stats, without outright changing the identity of a weapon. This was something that happened in the original Destiny when the Gjallarhorn rocket launcher was nerfed.
The damage of Gjallarhorn's trait, the Wolfpack rocket cluster (which fired a cluster of rockets instead of one), was nerfed so severely that it was no longer optimal to use at all. If the stats had been static on the weapon, it's possible that other attributes of the heavy weapon could have been modified instead.
Of course, this could mean that getting duplicate drops could become an issue, and the Destiny 2 team knows it. Said Smith:
"How can my second, third, and tenth Better Devils hand cannon be interesting? That's a question we should be asking and answering as quickly as we can. We have ideas. While I would like nothing more than to share those ideas with you, we're up against a deadline. I don't know if they'll make it for our Sept. 6 release date. But we have some ideas that we're pretty excited about."
