When Final Fantasy 14's next expansion, Stormblood, releases this month on June 20, two new jobs will be available. With the Red Mage and Samurai jobs opening up, the Final Fantasy MMO will host 15 jobs in total, but according to game director Naoki Yoshida, Square Enix isn't stopping there.
“I don’t think we’ll ever get to the point where we want to stop adding jobs,” Yoshida stated in an interview with Polygon. “For future expansions, adding jobs is really important. We couldn’t imagine not having new jobs. It’s part of the Final Fantasy series, and everybody loves jobs.”
Jobs are essentially classes when you compare FFXIV to other RPGs, and possessing 15 is already a large number compared to other massively multiplayer games. Instead of creating an entirely new character to experience a different class, Final Fantasy 14 allows you to switch your job fairly easily and without being forced to repeat any of the unavoidable story quests like in other MMOs.
Most other developers try to reduce the amount of classes they maintain to avoid possible complications and lessen the burden of continued game balance, but Yoshida doesn't follow in that concept.
“I believe that leveling in and of itself can be enjoyed as content,” he said. “Choosing which jobs to add will get harder and harder as we progress, but we still want to add them.”
Rather than limiting the number of options for its playerbase to lessen the time required for each balance pass, Square Enix wants to offer new jobs as continued content additions for players to consume.
During the same interview, Yoshida was also asked about his future endeavors and where he might find his road ending for Final Fantasy 14. He's lead the FFXIV team since 2010, only months after the game's initial failures. Since his arrival, he's rebuilt the title and saw surprising success in the relaunch of Final Fantasy 14. As a result, he plans on staying with the title for the foreseeable future.
“I don’t get the urge to move on to a new game at all,” Yoshida expressed. “Any new ideas that come up, I feel like I could go ahead and actualize them within Final Fantasy 14. Of course, if Square Enix requests for me to create a new and different game, I would have to consider what is being requested of me. But to be quite honest, I don’t think I get that itch to move on.”
He went on to state that if he was ever requested to change to a different project, he would try to find a way to work on the new project while keeping FFXIV on track.
