Sebastian Zielinski, former head of CD Projekt RED, has revealed how much he paid to the company for the rights of The Witcher. Andrzej Sapkowski in practice has sold the rights to the franchise for only 9500 US dollars. A very small amount if we consider the many millions earned by CD Projekt RED with video games.
Curiously, the first license agreement had been rejected by the writer, because CD Projekt Red had wrongly transcribed Geralt’s name in Gerald. TThis news seems to come into conflict with the recent statements of Andrzej Sapkowski, according to which the novels of The Witcher were already very famous before the game: in this case, we are surprised to find that the rights were sold for only 9500 US dollars.
Recall that the saga of CD Projekt Red has debuted in 2007 with the first chapter of The Witcher, followed by The Witcher 2 in 2011 and The Witcher 3 in 2015.
A recent announcement also suggests that The Witcher could reach new commercial proportions: a TV series produced by Netflix. However, it should be mentioned that in this project the Polish video game developer is not going to participate at all.
