Pokemon GO Promo Codes are now a new feature recently unveiled by Niantic, after months of mentions of Promo Codes in the games master code.
Currently, Promo Codes are only available on Android devices as there are restrictions put in place by the Apple store which prevents their use.
A similar situation occurs on fellow Niantic AR game Ingress, where players on iPhone are unable to enter passcodes due to Apple store restrictions.
This is because Apple insists on collecting a 30% fee on every transaction on an iOS device — even when that transaction occurred offline.
For the very same reason, you can’t purchase your non-Apple eBooks in-app and that's why you have to get your Kobo/Kindle/etc purchases via a web browser.
Currently, Ingress iOS players use a special website to redeem Ingress promo codes.
There are no codes available just yet, but some circles believe these will be used to hand out Legendary Pokemon following large-scale events, such as the one already mentioned by Niantic coming this Summer 2017.
It's also possible that a future use of these Promo codes could be to reward players from Sponsored Pokestops.
For instance, if Starbucks was to team up with the game for special Pokestops which gave out a free Lure with every sale of a particular drink.
While not linked to Promo Codes, one example of the sort of promotional deals we could soon be seeing in the UK can be currently witnessed by the new surprise new Pokemon GO event in Japan.
To celebrate the “Golden (Goruden) Week”, and every PokeStop that happens to be a McDonald’s - who is a Pokemon GO sponsor - are automatically lured.
That's over 2500 PokeStops across the country which will be spawning more rare Pokemon 24 hours a day seven days a week up until May 7.
It's possible we could see more of these large-scale deals coming to the UK in the future.
Currently, there is a Pokemon Go promo Code FAQ page run by Niantic which explains: “Pokémon Go occasionally offers promotional codes through our partnerships and special events.
“Promo codes can be used to redeem items such as Poké Balls, Lure Modules, Lucky Eggs, and more.”
To redeem a promo code:
• In the Map View, touch the Main Menu button.
• Touch Shop button.
• At the bottom of the screen, enter the promo code in the text field.
• Touch Redeem.
• After successfully redeeming a promo code, a notification will display the items added to your inventory.
This new promo codes feature isn't the only recent change to Pokemon GO, as players have recently had to come to terms with a major new update which has significantly changed the in-game daily catch rate.In the
In the process, this has also angered a small section of players who are being hit with soft bans preventing them from catching more Pokemon beyond the daily limit.
Previously the daily catch limit was around 1000, but recently Niantic has decreased it significantly down to 500, which is having a significant impact on some players who are used to catching high volumes of Pokemon for the purpose of levelling up quickly.
Here's a good explanation courtesy of one member of The Silph Road Reddit page:
"The current limit is 500 in a rolling window, so it is quite hard to keep track of. Think if you go out to hunt Saturday evening from 6pm to midnight and catch 400 Pokemon, then the next day up to 6pm, you can only catch 100 before you are hit with this nonsense limit - And since there is no counter, nobody will really know at any time how much they have left to catch."
As evidenced by one screenshot shared on The Silph Road, once you hit this 500 limit wall, every Pokemon you attempt to catch will automatically run away.
But the biggest issue which many fans could encounter is the potential of what Pokemon you could miss out on.
Let's say you hit the daily limit and then a fantastic Pokemon spawns, like a Snorlax, or Shiny Magikarp. You won't be able to catch it.
Not only is this angering the Pokemon GO community, but it could end up costing Nintendo and Niantic money, as judging from several comments, players are also being put off buying a Pokemon GO Plus device.
In addition to the change to the Daily Catch limit, it's also worth noting that players recently discovered another subtle change to trainers IV's.
More recently these changes came into effect and meant that the mechanics of wild Pokemon encounters altered changed dramatically.
In essence, it meant that wild Pokemon no longer have the same core stats for every player that encounters them, with the stats now being unique per plated based on their given level.
In the last few hours though, Niantic have made another subtle tweak to the game, meaning that any a Pokemon's IV, moves and Combat Power is now completely random for all Trainers between the levels of 1 to Level 29.
However, as before all trainers beyond level 30 will encounter Pokemon with the exact same stats (IV, Moves, Weight and Height).
Initially, it was believed that such a change to the main game mechanics was a sign of an "imminent" update and the mass rollout of several more shiny Pokemon into the game, following the launch of shiny Magikarp and shiny red Gyarados
