Given the sheer scale of Mass Effect: Andromeda, many gamers who picked up the title on launch day still haven’t progressed through the main overarching storyline in its entirety. The game has proven quite punishing on its highest difficulty, but one man has taken it upon himself to up the ante even further. Using no guns or revives, a YouTuber named BOYvsVIDEOGAME has beaten Mass Effect: Andromeda on the Insanity difficulty.
In the realm of Mass Effect, guns aren’t the only things which pack a punch. Players can utilize a special power called biotics to create mass effect fields, which can be used to obliterate or incapacitate enemies, among other handy things like helping the player warp around at high-speeds. Aligning himself as a biotic vangaurd, BOYvsVIDEOGAME took the fight to the Kett in an up close and personal manner, securing a future for the Andromeda Initiative through the power of his fists.
Of course, even an anti-gun Ryder can’t stop his squadmates from using their own projectile-based weapons, so this particular Andromeda campaign isn’t completely devoid of bullets. Still, the YouTuber exudes a massive amount of patience as he dips between nooks and crannies, waiting for the perfect moment to warp forward and punch the forces of evil right in the face.
The playthrough may also inspire gamers off-put by the game’s rather convoluted weapon inventory management system, since never using weapons would allow one to simply ignore the tedious research and development user interface that becomes mandatory for trigger-happy gamers. On the bright side, Andromeda took a step away from its predecessors when it comes to class structure, so it’s easy for any player to level up their biotic skills should they choose to do so.
This is far from the first time gamers have found unique ways to play through otherwise difficult content, and we have to imagine this anti-gun Ryder would pair up well with the door-toting Dark Souls warriors who also rose to prevalence this week. While Mass Effect: Andromeda has brought a lot of controversy surrounding what makes a game truly worth playing, it’s good to know that a galaxy’s worth of problems can still be solved by going full fisticuffs on the competition.
