As most Pokémon GO players already know, you can hatch hundreds of eggs before finding the Pokémon you are looking for, or it might never happen. It turns out there is a secret rarity level in the game, and is not the same as the egg distance tiers (2, 5 or 10km), but rather specific to how rare developer Niantic Labs decided to make a specific Pokémon.
TheSilphRoad, a group dedicated to uncovering everything there is to know about Pokémon and who has done extensive research on the subject of egg hatching, in collaboration with trainers on Reddit, have now shared their findings. The group of player have discovered that the egg come in different tiers of rarity.

- Ultra-Rare
TheSilphRoad explains that: “Egg species is determined according to hidden rarity 'tiers' that are not the same as the egg distance tiers (i.e. 2 km, 5 km, 10 km). In simple English, this means that not all 10 km egg species are rarer than 2 km egg species or 5 km egg species.
A simple example of this is that Dratini is presently a very common hatch, despite being in 10 km eggs. It is currently easier to acquire a 10 km egg with a Dratini inside than a 2 km egg with a Machop inside.” - Source
But what does this all mean for you, the player? Well, TheSilphRoad has compiled a table for eggs hatched both before and after the Gen 2 update. Below, you can view the first graph of pre-Gen 2 to see what the changes were of hatching a specific Pokémon.
The research results come from the hatching of 5,945 eggs and shows that the rarity levels are broken up into four tiers. Below, you can check out the initial findings of Gen 2 rarity levels.
The research on Gen 2 rarity levels are not yet complete, as the data collected are from 2514 eggs. TheSilphRoad explains that the data is “sufficient to be confident in the Common / Uncommon tier species, with a few final ambiguities in the Rare and Ultra-Rare tiers”
The information should help trainers with buddy selection with the knowledge above, for example that Dratini is easier to hatch.
