Destiny 2 Story Details Hint at Major Changes to Gameplay

After months of rumors and speculation, Bungie finally unveiled the highly-anticipated Destiny 2 through a sharp looking CG trailer. Though no gameplay is shown, the trailer revolves around the story for the game as Zavala and Cayde-6 rally the remaining troops after a devastating Cabal attack on the Tower and Last City. Thanks to some new details, it looks as though players won’t be these all powerful beings right out of the gate this time around.

According to the retail description for Destiny 2, the Cabal leader Ghaul has managed to strip the City’s guardians of their power, forcing many to flee as the city fell. The description goes on to reveal that players will be traveling to other worlds within the solar system to discover weapons and new combat abilities, ultimately reuniting the scattered heroes to confront the Red Legion.

According to Reddit user Tuinybadger, one of the rumored locations players will go to in Destiny 2 is Saturn, where the former Iron Lord Lady Efrideet, had been hiding out with a colony of other Guardians that no longer needed the Traveler’s light. Armed with this information, it’s possible that players may need to learn those techniques while also potentially discovering new skills and abilities through space travel as well.

The weakened Guardian theory also gained traction on Reddit where users discovered Cabal grimoire cards in Destiny that reveal that the group had been investigating ways to stop Ghost resurrection along with methods to suppress Guardian abilities. Going further, the theory is also supported by the initial promotional art for Destiny 2, which not only depicts the Last City on fire, but showing the Traveler, which looks to be in even worse shape than it was in the first game.

Interestingly enough, some fans were initially disappointed that their characters would not be transferring over to the next game. In addition to revealing a weakened state for all Guardians, the trailer also reveals that many Guardians were killed in the invasion, which certainly can be used as the reason that characters cannot transfer over.

Do you think this theory holds water or are you expecting to see a more traditional style gameplay loop? Share your theories with us below in the comments.

Destiny 2 launches on September 8, 2017 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
