Another day, another Nintendo Switch rumor. The latest rumor is centered around the system’s launch lineup. We’ve heard that Zelda: Breath of the Wild won’t be available on launch day but, if these latest rumors are true, the Switch will still have some heavy hitters for those who purchase the system when it is released.
According to Let’s Play Video Games‘ Laura Dale (who has been reporting on Nintendo leaks all year), two of the first party games in the Switch’s lineup include a new Super Mario Bros and a new Splatoon.
The Mario game will be more like Mario 64 or Mario Galaxy in that it features an open 3D hub world where players can access different levels. It will have co-op multiplayer where players work together to complete goals. The players will be tethered to each other to keep them from going too far (hopefully it won’t be anything like Knuckles Chaotix). This game is currently in development, and the press will be able to play a demo of it sometime in January 2017.
The more expensive SKU of the Switch (we’ll get to that in a bit) will come bundled with a new version of Splatoon. This edition will have a 1 vs. 1 mode where two players on separate Switch systems can duke it out for control of the map. The game will get additional single player content and will receive free content as consistently as the original Wii U version.
The most interesting part of this rumor is that one of the launch games will be The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. We actually saw Skyrim footage during the Switch reveal trailer, but Bethesda has since said that there are no plans to bring Skyrim to the Switch. This one seems a bit far-fetched considering how the Switch is rumored to only have 4GB of internal RAM, but the game was able to run on last-gen systems with 516MB of RAM, so it’s not entirely impossible for the game to be able to run on the Switch.
One thing that caught my eye about this report is that Splatoon will come bundled with the more expensive SKU of the Switch. This suggests that there will be more than one system available on launch day. It is obviously too early to tell, but I guess that there will be one SKU that is just the base system and another that comes bundled with games and accessories like the Pro controller seen in the reveal trailer.
This rumor isn’t as solid as those from places like EuroGamer or Emily Rogers so make sure to take all of this with the proverbial grain of salt. Though it is likely that Mario and Splatoon will be released at launch, don’t hold your breath for Skyrim. Hopefully, more light will be shed when the Switch-focused Nintendo Direct is released on January 12.
