Over the past few days, reports have emerged about eggs being stationed at gyms instead of Pokemon. Obviously, this should not be possible; because eggs have no HP, they can not be defeated like Pokemon can, meaning this is effectively a way to claim a gym and hold on to it indefinitely. That means the cheaters can get those daily coin bonuses without actually having to do any work defending the gym.
A lot of these reports have come from New York City, where one user in particular has claimed a lot of territory this way, although there have been other encounters with the glitch all over the world. Right now, there’s nothing that can be done other than reporting the offending account to Niantic. You can do this on Niantic’s website using this form; just make sure you take down the cheater’s nickname, and the company should issue a permaban to these players.
Most of the accounts that are exploiting the egg bug seem to be level fives, meaning the gamers clearly know this is a temporary bug that they will probably be banned for. Some reports have emerged of gyms that have been taken over in this way going back to normal, leading some to believe the issue has been fixed, but individual cases continue to pop up. Unfortunately, it seems that this will likely not be 100 percent resolved until the game’s next update.
Niantic Labs, however, has become much more strict about banning players lately, and so they will probably not take this situation lightly. They recently added a new section to the website allowing players to appeal a ban, indicating that they would be strictly enforcing the app’s terms of service.
“Our goal is to provide a fair, fun and legitimate game experience for everyone,” Niantic wrote. “We will continue to work with all of you to improve the quality of the gameplay, including ongoing optimization and fine tuning of our anti-cheat system.”
