Fallout 4's Survival mode will be completely overhaul says Bethesda

When Fallout 4 launched, it included several difficulty modes, the highest of which was Survival. This was a deceptive name for the mode, because fans expected that it would alter the mechanics of the game in a manner similar to the Hardcore Mode from Fallout: New Vegas. Unfortunately, Survival just altered the amount of damage that players inflicted and received, along with a few other minor tweaks like an  increased likelihood of powerful legendary enemies spawning. According to a recent tweet from the developer, players are getting a proper Survival Mode in the near future.

Tweets from Bethesda Game Studios stated: We know [fans are] ready to learn what’s coming for Fallout 4 DLC. We’re not far off, and we think you’ll be excited.” The studio also went on to say, “We’re also doing a complete overhaul of Fallout 4 Survival mode. Food, sleep, diseases, danger and more. Stay tuned.”

The most noteworthy part of the tweet is  the mention of diseases. Bethesda had lots of diseases for characters to contract in their Elder Scrolls franchise, but Fallout has used disease sparingly. In Elder Scrolls, diseases can reduce stats and skills, or even turn players into vampire and werewolves. In pale comparison, Fallout 4′s main game has a quest where The Sole Survivor can contract a mole rat disease that causes a slight drop in hit points (rather than turning them into a were-rat, sadly). The brief mole rat disease quest is probably an indicator of how disease will work in in Fallout 4, and fans shouldn’t hold out hope that Lycantropy and Porphyric Hemophilia will be among the possibilities.

The need to eat, drink, and sleep were part of the Hardcore Mode in Fallout New Vegas, and it’s likely that Fallout 4‘s Survival overhaul will mimic the mechanics seen there.
