Destiny 2 Is Getting Its Own Companion App

The Destiny Companion app, accessed on mobile devices or on desktop through Bungie.net, has been the official source for a plethora of information and functions over the three-year lifespan of Destiny 1. Activity and vendor information, the collection of lore called the Grimoire, gear management, LFG forums, and more have all been accessed through it.

But with the impending release of Destiny 2, the app is getting an update. The game’s developer, Bungie, detailed some of the new and returning functionality of the app in their weekly blog. Besides a graphical facelift that includes weapon models that look much closer to the actual game, Destiny 2 fans will be have some new features at their fingertips.

The first new addition is an “Explore” section that looks to combine news and updates about Destiny 2, community creations, and forums all in one place. Then there is the “Clan” section that is getting new attention. Bungie is doubling down on clans in Destiny 2, with more integration in the game, and them functioning as the foundation of the new Guided Games – that is, a semi-matchmaking system being integrated into raids. As for this section of the Companion app, users will be able to manage their clans, track rewards shared by the group, and use a new clan chat system.

The Destiny Companion app will also see the return of some familiar features. For instance, the Gear manager to view and equip armor and weapons, the Recruit forum that is Bungie’s own system of LFG to find other players to play with, as well as the Profile and Support sections will be coming back.

The new Companion app will update on August 23 across the Apple and Android Stores, as well as on Bungie.net itself. This update will completely replace the Destiny 1 version of the app so it will no longer work with the first game. Bungie is keeping the API for Destiny 1 active, however, so fans will need to rely on third-party apps to replace any functionality they were using the Destiny Companion app for.

Destiny 2 releases on September 6, 2017 for PS4 and Xbox One, and on October 24, 2017 for PC.
