In Patch 7.3, the Artifact Knowledge cap was increased back to level 50 and you no longer need to head back to your Order Hall for research.
Instead, you will automatically gain 1 AK level each week and all characters will start with Artifact Knowledge Level 41 when Patch 7.3 goes live. The focus in 7.3 shifts to the Netherlight Crucible and relic customization (Insignia of the Grand ArmyInsignia of the Grand Army).
The multipliers are the same as they were when AK Level 50 was introduced back in 7.2's Build 23657.
