Surprise! The long wait is finally over - Akande Ogundimu, the Doomfist is here, and he's on the Overwatch PTR right now.
Doomfist is an Offense hero and is a highly mobile, powerful frontline fighter. He has a ranged attack with his Hand Cannon, but his main utility is going to come from charging into the fray with his Rocket Punch. He can also slam the ground, knocking enemies into the air and off balance.
His Meteor Strike ultimate is where he really shines - against a tightly packed group, he jumps out of view, then crashes down to earth dealing massive damage.
Of course, Doomfist will likely be a boon to dive compositions, given his abilities - and the bane of death ball comps everywhere with Meteor Strike, instantly able to dive to the backline if not focused down. Here's the full description of Doomfist's abilities:
Main fire: Hand Cannon
- Short-range weapon with spread. Reloads Automatically
Alt fire: Rocket Punch
- Hold to charge then release to launch forward and knock an enemy back. Damage increases if the enemy hits a wall
Shift: Rising Uppercut
- Knock an enemy into the air.
E: Seismic Slam
- Leap forward and smash the ground.
Ultimate: Meteor Strike
- Press Q to leap up into the air. Move the targeting circle, then press fire to strike the targeted area.
Passive: The Best Defense
- Dealing damage with abilities creates temporary personal shields.
The story of Doomfist's reveal is a long and twisted one. What began as a throwaway line made by Chris Metzen during Overwatch's development and subsequent reveal became a massive, fan driven hype engine. Folks wanted to play as the hero that could "level a skyscraper" with a single swing.
Doomfist Talon breakout PTR Overwatch
This was further exacerbated when a fan suggested that that much power could only be voiced by Terry Crews - the actor agreed. This led the community on a months long, winding road of hyping themselves up for the hero's reveal. This idea seemed to have some credence to it as well, with Crews making an appearance at the Blizzard Irvine campus. Even Jeff Kaplan, Overwatch's Game Director, got in on the fun, suggesting that Crews would be perfect for a great many things at the BAFTA awards a few months back.
Blizzard began to take advantage of this hype by having the Doomfist Gauntlet get stolen from the payload on Numbani, something that was described as happening just after his breakout from a Helix Security prison by Talon in a lore update a few days ago.
This was followed up with Orisa's reveal, showing that Doomfist had attacked the Numbani airport and destroyed OR-15 defense units - which led Efi Oladele to create Orisa out of a destroyed unit.
Kaplan said that Blizzard had a long plan for Doomfist - and we think that over seven months of teasing combined with other hero releases qualifies as such. This surprise reveal even threw off the most dedicated Reddit supersleuths - even if we already knew Doomfist would make his debut this patch thanks to crash logs mentioning the villain.
