A number of Sun and Moon abilities have Field Effects. Field Effects occur even if the lead Pokémon is fainted, resulting in a passive buff for your team. Stacking Field Effects is important when catching or hunting for specific Pokémon.
Cute Charm
Every wild Pokémon will be of the opposite gender of your Cute Charm Pokémon 66.7% of the time, regardless of their Gender Ratio.
SOURCE | LOCATION |
Igglybuff (lv. 11 – 17) | Route 4 and Route 6, Akala Island Day time |
Cleffa (lv. 25 – 28) | Mount Hokulani, Ula’ula Island Night Time |
The power of Cute Charm is hard to argue, as it enables you to catch Pokémon with low gender ratios such as female Salandit, Chikorita, Eevee. Consider using it to catch parents for Breeding also. Remember that you Cute Charm works regardless of the opponent’s Gender Ratio!
Compound Eyes
Significantly improves the chance for wild Pokémon to hold items:
50% -> 60%
5% -> 20%
1% -> 5%
SOURCE | LOCATION |
Metapod (lv. 9 – 12) | Melemele Meadow, Melemele Island |
Butterfree (lv. 9 – 12) | Melemele Meadow, Melemele Island |
Compound Eyes is an important tool for any Item Hunter. If you’re on a quest to collect items such as Metal Coat (Magnemite), Razor Fang (Bruxish) and Razor Claw (Jangmo-o), make sure you have a Butterfree with Compound Eyes in your team!
Magnet Pull and Static
These Field Effects will force 50% of wild Pokémon to be Steel Type (Magnet Pull) or Electric Type (Static), if any are available for an encounter.
SOURCE | ABILITY | LOCATION |
Magnemite (lv. 6 – 8) | Magnet Pull | Route 1: Trainer School, Melemele Island |
Pichu (lv. 3 – 5) | Static | Route 1, Melemele Island |
Although not as exciting as other Field Abilities, Magnet Pull and Static can help you track down and obtain several hard to find Electric and Steel Pokémon. Elekid is an option for Static also, but Pichu is far easier to obtain.
#2 Item Hunting
Item Hunting in Sun and Moon is easier than it was before, mainly as Butterfree is now available with Compound Eyes and Phantump now has Frisk ability. Frisk notifies you if Wild Pokémon ha a held item.
Step #1
Place a fainted Butterfree (with Compound Eyes field ability) in your Lead Slot (first Slot). This will still activate the ability, but you will start the encounter with your second Pokémon.
Step #2
Your second Pokémon should be a Phantump (lv 20-23) or Trevenant! Phantump can evolve into Trevenant when traded, but both have the same ability we need: Frisk. Teach your Phantump/Trevenant Thief via using a TM.
POKEMON | ABILITY | MOVES |
Phantump | Frisk | Thief + Anything |
Trevenant | Frisk | Shadow Claw, Protect Growth, Double Team |
Frisk allows you to scout for held items and Tief allows you to steal them. Butterfree Compound Eyes increases the chance of wild Pokémon having held items.
#3 Catching Beldum
Beldum is one of, if not the hardest Pokémon to catch in Sun and Moon. Beldum is a tough nut to crack, but there is a solid strategy in place that almost guarantees capture.
Step #1
Get a Duosion/Reuniclus with Magic Guard. You can use Island Scan on Tuesdays to obtain it. You need Magic Guard!
POKEMON | ABILITY | MOVES |
Duosion | Magic Guard | Skill Swap + Anything |
Reuniclus |
Step #2
Get as many Pokémon ready with Trick/Switcheroo holding a Leppa Berry. These include Kadabra, Alakazam, Sableye, Alola Persian etc. You can find Berry Locations here.
Step #3
Encounter Beldum in Mount Hokulani. Put it to Sleep immediately and switch in Duosion/Reuniclus. Use your Skill Swap to swap Magic Guard onto it, resulting in no recoil from Beldum’s Take Down move.
From this point on it’s a rotation between your Catcher and Trickster Pokémon:
Switch to a catcher Pokémon and weaken it, try catching it with a Pokéball
If it wakes up, put it to sleep, switch your Trick/Switcheroo Pokémon and give him a Leppa Barry
Rinse and repeat until he’s not caught
#4 Catching Self Destructing Pokémon
Some Pokémon are very difficult to catch, due to their inherent ability to self destruct. Usually, this applies to Geodude and similar Pokémon.
Step #1
Get a Parasect with Damp Hidden Ability, or a Golduck with the same ability. You can encounter Paras (lv. 18-21) during Day in Lush Jungle, Akala island and evolve it into Parasect.
POKEMON | ABILITY | MOVES |
Parasect | Damp | Spore False swipe + any other 2 moves |
Golduck | Damp | Soak + any other 3 moves |
Step #2
Due to Damp being active, enemy Pokémon can no longer self destruct! Parasect can now weaken them and catch them with ease. Not a problem at all!
