Two new releases, fresh off their theatrical runs, debuted in the top two spots on the combined Blu-ray Disc and DVD sales chart the week ended Oct. 2, while the previous week’s top seller, Paramount’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows,” toppled all the way down to No. 6 in its second week of release.
Universal Pictures’ “Warcraft,” a sci-fi actioner based on the popular video game series of the same name, bowed at No. 1 on both the NPD VideoScan overall disc sales chart, which tracks combined Blu-ray Disc and DVD sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
So what could possibly be the reason why the DVD performs well in the U.S versus the movie?
Well, I bet it's the freebies and all the extended/cutscenes that it contains, which were nowhere to be found in the movie.
As you all know, select physical editions of the Warcraft film includes a digital key for World of Warcraft which unlocks all expansions up to Warlords of Draenor. The key also includes 30 days of game time. It also includes keys for the Hearthstone mage hero Medivh the Guardian and Gul’dan for Heroes of the Storm.
All of the stuff mentioned above are probably the cause of the increase in sale but, I think that really made the DVD more worth buying is the fact that it contains some cut scenes (deleted scenes), and extended scenes that might have made the movie a blockbuster if they were added.
Coming in a close second on the overall disc sales chart was Warner’s “Central Intelligence,” a comedy with Dwayne Johnson. Even though “Central Intelligence” earned more than twice as much at the domestic box office as “Warcraft,” $127.4 million versus $47.2 million, it only sold 90% as many units on disc its first week in stores.
Marvel’s “Captain America: Civil War,” distributed on home video by Walt Disney Studios, slipped to No. 3 from No. 2, while another Disney film, the 25th anniversary edition of the animated classic “Beauty and the Beast,” fell to No. 4 from No. 3.
Rounding out the top five was “The Shallows,” a new thriller from Sony Pictures that stars Blake Lively as a surfer attacked by a shark. The film earned $55.1 million in U.S. theaters.
On the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, “Beauty and the Beast” came in at No. 2 after bowing at No. 1 the previous week. “Central Intelligence” debuted at No. 3, bumping “Captain America” to No. 4. Rounding out the top five was “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows.”
NPD research shows that “Warcraft” generating an overwhelming 72% of its total unit sales from Blu-ray Disc, as opposed to just 37% for “Central Intelligence.” Blu-ray Disc accounted for 40% of the total unit sales for “The Shallows.”
On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart for the week, the Sony Pictures thriller “The Shallows” debuted at No. 1, knocking “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows” to No. 2, a wek after the sequel’s debut in the top spot.
Warner’s “Me Before You,” a romantic drama with Emilia Clarke (of “Game of Thrones” fame), shot up to No. 3 now that its 28-day holdback from Redbox is over.
Universal Pictures’s “The Huntsman: Winter’s War” slipped to No. 4 from No. 2, while “Captain America: Civil War” remained at No. 5 for the second consecutive week.
