Sombra Details Leaked Ahead of Overwatch Halloween Event

After weeks and months of an elaborate ARG, Overwatch’s new hero may have debuted in an ironic way, a leak, courtesy of a Russian Overwatch group. The URL in which the hero and her description were posted has been taken down, but a screenshot has been making the rounds that shows an entirely plausible design and backstory for the champion.

While Sombra has mostly been portrayed as a black blob with a skull mask in fan culture since the ARG started, the design shows a Latina woman with a wild hairstyle, a purple trenchcoat and some sort of Uzi-ish submachine gun. The cropped text below her is as follows (via /u/vitulla):

[...][p]rotect the castle doors from the Zomnics and Dr. Junkenstein’s evil allies.”[...]

Everything here aligns with what we’ve learned about Sombra from early hints, with the revelation of a new Halloween “brawl” event that might be some sort of tower defense-ish minigame from the sound of it.

It is theoretically possible that all of this could be some sort of elaborate fan creation, but we have already seen Halloween loot boxes leak previous to this, and this close to what could even be a Monday announcement, I’m inclined to believe this is legit. Other folks have tried tracing the original URL this all came from, and it does seem to have originated from Blizzard. I have reached out to Blizzard to see if they will comment on this leak, but have not heard back at this time.

However, the remaining piece of the ARG puzzle, amomentincrime.com, which has had a weeks-long upload in the works is still only at 83%. Fans estimate that correspondents to full 100% completion on October 17th, which would in fact be next Monday. An even that runs from then until November 1st does seem plausible, though perhaps Sombra may not debut exactly when the Halloween event starts. That’s unclear.

I’m pretty excited either way, and this does seem like a cool character design from the limited glimpse we see here. What’s still unknown is the extent of her kit, and really, even what role she’ll play. Given her focus on omnics, perhaps some sort of defensive builder, but with that Uzi, maybe an attacker.

More information to come, and I doubt this will be the last leak we see regarding Overwatch’s Halloween event.
