Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture Walkthrough

Intro:

Made by The Chinese Room – the studio responsible for the hauntingly beautiful Dear Esther – this tale of how people respond in the face of grave adversity is a non-linear, open-world experience that pushes innovative interactive storytelling to the next level.

Over the course of the game, the player slowly pieces together the fate of the valley from the fragmentary memories of the people who made it their home. By finding and interacting with the traces of these lost lives, the player gradually learns about the stories and relationships of the inhabitants – how they lived, and how they died. All this is accomplished through revolutionary environmental storytelling – what you see and hear in Rapture is just as important as what you do.

Story:

Yaughton, Shropshire. 06:37am 6th June 1984.

An empty village, nestled in an idyllic valley in the English countryside. Something has gone terribly wrong. This story begins with the end of the world…

Deep within the Shropshire countryside, the village of Yaughton stands empty. Toys lie forgotten in the playground, the wind blows quarantine leaflets around the silent churchyard. Down on Appleton’s farm, crops rustle untended, the early harvest abandoned halfway through. The birds lie where they have fallen. A pair of shoes hang from the overhead wires. The windmill continues to turn unobserved. Strange voices haunt the radio waves as uncollected washing hangs listlessly on the line. There is light in the wires. The televisions are tuned to vacant channels. Above it all, the telescopes of the Observatory point out at dead stars and endless darkness. And someone remains behind, to try and unravel the mystery.

Features Video:

A Very British Apocalypse.

Part 1: Introduction to Yaughton Valley

Hollie and Nathan will be your voice-over commentators guiding you around Yaughton’s areas.

The world ended 30 minutes ago. Time and space have collapsed. Trapped in an endless moment, it is down to you to discover the secret of the apocalypse. It is time to begin.

Tip: While walking, hold down the R2 trigger to start gradually sprinting. – There, that’s much faster than the otherwise slow pace when crossing large areas.

Part 2: Wendy – The End
The bells ringing leads up to the church scene (from 50 minutes on-wards in the video) and from there we reach the “Wendy” section among the trees (at 59 minutes inwards).

Then the next 3 hours Doug takes over and leads you up to the game’s ending by following the light and unraveling the storylines.

Tip: Life under emergency conditions will continue, but you should take measures to ensure your safety. Being prepared to meet any emergency will be the key to survival.

Part 3: Ending Explanation & Credits Discussion

Here’s the uncovering of the Everybody’s Gone to Rapture ending and an explanation / discussion of what happened.

Here’s the Number Station code string from the ending credits and what it decrypts into:

914 2085 231115 156 1 82113114 25914719 451208 238120 19211822922519
919 1 19520 156 1620518712152319 1915135 21897820518 1144 1915135
491313518 914 2085 315121253209225 218191419 156 20815195 4511851920
2015 208513 2085185 919 914 208151915 23815 185131914 1 315121253209225

SOLUTION: It’s a simple substitution of number 1 to 26 for letters A to Z, so 915 splits to 9 15, which is “i” and “n”, hence “in”. The codes translate to a Douglas Hofstadter quote:

“In the wake of a human being’s death, what survives is a set of afterglows, some brighter and some dimmer, in the collective brains of those who were dearest to them… there is, in those who remain… a collective corona that still glows.”
